| Italy's Ischia Fest to Honor 'Winx Club' Creator Straffi, Unveils First Films
Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, an honorary citizen of Ischia, will join Straffi at Wednesday's official announcement in Cannes.
ROME – Iginio Straffi, the director, writer, and producer behind Italy’s most successful animated films, will be honored as the filmmaker of the year at the Ischia Global Film and Music Festival, organizers said Monday, also naming the first six films that will screen at the summer festival.
The official announcement will be made by Ischia Fest founder Pascal Vicedomini on Wednesday, in Cannes, at the Italian Pavilion Cinecitta. Straffi will be on hand for the announcement along with Oscar winner Christoph Waltz, an honorary citizen of Lacco Ameno, where the picturesque island festival is based. Waltz, who won best supporting actor Oscars for his roles in Inglorious Basterds and Django Unchained, both from Quentin Tarantino, is a member of the Cannes jury this year.
Festival organizers announced the first six films that would screen at the July 14-21 festival, including the European premiere of Shawn Levy’s comedy The Internship, which stars Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as two over-aged Google interns. The film is produced by Arnon Milchan, who, as previously announced, will join actor Samuel L. Jackson at the festival to receive the event's prestigious Ischia Legends career honors.
Also on tap: Girl Most Likely, a comedy from Shari Singer Berman and Robert Pulcini starring Annette Bening and Kristen Wiig as an unlikely mother and daughter combo; Dito Montiel drama Empire State; The Gun, the Cake and the Butterfly from Amanda Eliasch; Mexican comedy Marcelo from Omar Ynigo -- all of them European premieres -- and the Italian premiere of Ethel, a documentary about the Kennedy political dynasty in the U.S., directed by Rory Kennedy, the niece of former U.S. President John F. Kennedy and whose father was senator, attorney general, presidential candidate and activist Robert F. Kennedy.
Straffi is the founder of Italy’s Rainbow production company, which has produced the blockbuster animated television series Winx Club and last year’s Gladiators of Rome animated children's drama.
The summer's edition of the festival will be the 11th edition of the event.

Mercoledì a Cannes si presenta l'Ischia Global Festival
CANNES. Padrino l’attore austriaco Christoph Waltz, l’11ª edizione dell’Ischia Global Film & Music fest sarà presentata ufficialmente a Cannes mercoledì, ore 15 presso l’“Italian Pavillion-Villaggio Internazionale”. Waltz, già vincitore di due premi Oscar e attualmente giurato al festival più importante del mondo, insieme alle colleghe Elsa Zylberstein e Clotilde Courau (in rappresentanza della Francia nazione ospite quest’anno), all’israeliana Moran Atias, al produttore e regista Iginio Straffi, vincitore del “Premio Ischia Award-Filmmaker Italiano” del 2013, all’ideatore e produttore del “Global Festival” Pascal Vicedomini (nella foto con Monica Bellucci), annunceranno sulla Croisette il programma e i contenuti di massima della manifestazione nonché un nuovo grande ospite a cui verrà assegnato un terzo “Ischia Legend Award” dal 14 al 21 luglio. Due dei riconoscimenti più prestigiosi attribuiti dall’“Accademia Internazionale Arte Ischia”, come emerso nei giorni scorsi, andranno alla superstar americana Samuel L. Jackson, campione di tutti i tempi del box office, e al produttore Arnon Milchan, oltre 100 opere all’attivo tra cui capolavori di Martin Scorsese, Sergio Leone, Oliver Stone. Christoph Waltz, cittadino onorario del comune ischitano di Lacco Ameno, dove sorge lo storico albergo “Regina Isabella” sede principale del festival, è dal 2009 amico e sostenitore dell’happening cinematografico più atteso dell’estate mondiale.
Per Iginio Straffi sarà, invece, la prima volta al “Global Film Festival” nell’anno che l’ha visto protagonista sui grandi schermi internazionali con il film d’animazione “Gladiatori di Roma 3D” di imminente uscita americana dopo essersi distinto in tanti paesi del mondo per gli ottimi incassi.
Un successo che consolida la leadership europea dello studio di animazione Rainbow, già creatore di 3 film sulle Winx nati sulla scia delle serie tv diffuse da 150 canali internazionali, e che attraverso il colosso americano “Viacom” è distribuito capillarmente negli Usa (“Nickelodeon”). “Ischia Global Fest” 2013 avrà come chairman l’attore e regista Michele Placido (già premiato sull’isola verde nel 2007) e come presidente la produttrice inglese Trudie Styler. La manifestazione è promossa dall’Accademia Internazionale Arte Ischia, con il contributo di Bnl-Gruppo Bnp Paribas, “3 Italia” ed altri sponsor privati in via di definizione. L’evento dell’estate cinematografica è realizzato con il patrocinio della Regione Campania - assessorato al Turismo e Beni Culturali ed il sostegno della D.G. Cinema del Ministero per i Beni e Attività Culturali e della Camera Commercio I.A.A. di Napoli. E a testimonianza della credibilità che si è guadagnato negli anni, in quest’anno di difficoltà economiche per i paesi europei, il festival creato da Vicedomini ha ottenuto un concreto sostegno dai produttori di Hollywood che interverranno a proprie spese all’ormai classico “Production Summit” al quale in passato hanno aderito anche Harvey Weinstein, Avi Lerner, Mark Canton, Lawrence Bender e Ryan Kavanaugh, Tucker Tooley, Jeremy Thomas, Alison Owen. Simposio sulla produzione cinematografica che quest’anno vedrà protagonisti Avi Lerner, Mark Canton, Nicolas Chartier, Tomas Langmann, Paula Wagner, Nick Nicita, Mike Nozik, Heidi Jo Markel e l’italoamericano Randall Emmett che a Cannes è giunto con Martin Scorsese per lanciare un nuovo film “Silence”. Sarà, infine, il regista italiano Mimmo Calopresti a coordinare il Social Cinema Forum “Inspiring Social Solidarity” che discuterà di “Povertà e solidarieta” in collaborazione con i 100 autori e che assegnerà l’“Ischia Humanitarian Award” alla signora Kerry Kennedy, presidente del “Rfk Center for Justice and Human Rights”.
